The recommended path
What is this?In publication order — read in publication order — king's dark tidings is a single continuous arc following rezkin, so chronological order matches release order. the one reading-order decision worth knowing about is the companion novel mage of no renown (tales of terralor #1, 2022), a prequel about wesson, a fan-favorite character from the main series. kel kade has said it's best read after book 4 (kingdoms and chaos), since it contains light spoilers for the main series. you can also skip it entirely without missing anything in the main story.
King’s Dark Tidings is Kel Kade’s seven-book epic fantasy series, one of the defining self-published-to-bestseller stories of the 2010s indie fantasy boom. The series follows Rezkin, a young man raised in absolute isolation at a secret training fortress and conditioned through a brutal regimen called the Rules and Skills to be a near-perfect weapon. When the fortress is destroyed in the opening pages of Free the Darkness and Rezkin is forced into the outside world for the first time, he carries a set of artifact weapons given to him by a dying king — and almost no understanding of how ordinary people think, feel, or interact.
The premise sounds bleak; the books are not. Much of the series’ charm comes from Rezkin trying, with surprising earnestness, to apply his rigid training to the messy social, romantic, and political situations he keeps stumbling into. The cast that gathers around him — the band of friends, mages, and nobles he reluctantly collects — is the heart of why readers stick around for seven volumes.
The publication arc itself is part of the story. Kade self-published Free the Darkness on Kindle in late 2015, followed quickly by Reign of Madness (2016) and Legends of Ahn (2017). Then a multi-year gap. Kingdoms and Chaos and Dragons and Demons arrived together in 2022 under Kade’s own Dark Rover imprint, with Knight of Shadows (2024) and Ritual of Ruin (2025) bringing the saga toward its conclusion. For new readers, the cleanest path is straight publication order — start with Free the Darkness and move book by book.
One side note worth knowing about: Mage of No Renown (2022) is a companion novel set in the same world, the first book in a small spinoff series called Tales of Terralor. It is a prequel of sorts about Wesson, a journeyman mage who becomes a major character in the main series, and most readers find it lands best slotted after book four — Kingdoms and Chaos — when its character revelations are spoiler-safe. You can also skip it entirely; the main seven-book arc stands on its own.
