Legends of Ahn moves the story off the continent entirely, putting Rezkin and his companions on board ship and bound for Ferélle, a southern empire with a religious tradition and magical practices that look almost nothing like what they grew up with at home. The culture-clash material that ran through the first two books gets pushed much harder here — Rezkin, who is already a stranger to ordinary social life, is now also a foreigner in a foreign court.
Kade also begins to drop a much heavier set of hints about what the Rules and Skills training was actually preparing Rezkin for, and where the older masters who raised him fit into a larger, much older history. The book closes the opening trilogy of the series and sets up the long-running storylines that will pay off in the later volumes.
