The recommended path

What is this?

In publication order — publication order is the only order that matters here — brotherband is a single continuous arc. the series is set in skandia, runs parallel to the later books of ranger's apprentice, and crosses over with the main series in several books. you can read brotherband as a standalone, but fans of ranger's apprentice will catch characters and references that land better if you've read at least through the emperor of nihon-ja first. for the full araluen universe reading order, see the main ranger's apprentice page.

The Brotherband Chronicles is John Flanagan’s nine-book sibling series to Ranger’s Apprentice, set in the same world and often running alongside the same events from the other side of the map. Where Ranger’s Apprentice is about a boy learning the quiet, patient craft of a Ranger, Brotherband is about Hal Mikkelson — a half-Skandian, half- Araluen boy — learning to lead a ship.

The Skandian approach to problem-solving is different from the Ranger’s approach. Where a Ranger would arrange a night ambush, a Skandian skirl would ram the enemy ship, board it, and argue about who goes first. Hal is a Skandian who builds a better ship (a smaller, faster one, a Heron) and assembles a crew of misfits — a Brotherband — around a design nobody trusts. The series is about a young captain, an unconventional crew, and a long voyage that keeps finding bigger trouble than the last one.

Brotherband crosses over with Ranger’s Apprentice repeatedly — Hal’s crew works for the Oberjarl, and that’s Erak — but the nine books form a complete arc on their own. Start with The Outcasts (2011) and read straight through The Stern Chase (2022).

If you’re reading the whole Araluen universe, we recommend slotting Brotherband after The Early Years in the combined reading order. See the full Araluen reading order for both variants.

Frequently asked questions

How many Brotherband books are there?
Nine, from The Outcasts (2011) to The Stern Chase (2022). The series is currently at what appears to be a natural pause; no tenth book has been announced.
What is the correct reading order for the Brotherband Chronicles?
Publication order is the only order that matters. The nine books tell one continuous arc following Hal Mikkelson and the Heron brotherband: The Outcasts, The Invaders, The Hunters, Slaves of Socorro, Scorpion Mountain, The Ghostfaces, The Caldera, Return of the Temujai, and The Stern Chase.
Do I need to read Ranger's Apprentice before Brotherband?
No — Brotherband stands on its own. But Brotherband is set in the same world as Ranger's Apprentice and crosses over with it several times: Slaves of Socorro, Scorpion Mountain, and Return of the Temujai all feature Rangers from the main series. Readers who know Ranger's Apprentice catch more. Readers who don't are not lost.
Where does Brotherband fit in the wider Araluen timeline?
Brotherband runs roughly parallel to the later books of Ranger's Apprentice, and extends past them. The earliest Brotherband books are contemporaneous with the Nihon-Ja and Lost Stories era of Ranger's Apprentice; the later Brotherband books move past the main series and into the same timeframe as The Royal Ranger.
Is Brotherband for the same age range as Ranger's Apprentice?
Yes, roughly. Both are marketed as upper middle grade / young adult, roughly ages 10 and up. Brotherband's tone is slightly bawdier and the voice is slightly less formal, which some readers prefer and others don't.
