The Invaders

The Andomal — Skandia’s most sacred artifact — has been stolen. The Herons, who failed to guard it, are given one chance to redeem themselves: get it back, or stay outcast forever. Zavac, the pirate responsible, is already on the open sea with the entire continent’s coast to hide behind.

The Invaders begins a three-book chase that drives the first arc of the Brotherband series. Hal learns to captain in open water, the Heron proves itself against ships twice its size, and the series commits to the structure it will use for most of its run: a voyage, a problem that turns bigger than it looked, and a crew that solves it by being smarter than everyone around them.
