A cult — the Outsiders — is working its way across the six kingdoms of Hibernia, bankrupting towns with extortion disguised as tithing and leaving each one weaker than it found them. The trail leads to Clonmel, where the king is dying and the heir apparent has plans of his own. Halt knows the cult because he’s known it before, back in a life he’s spent twenty years refusing to talk about.
The Kings of Clonmel is the first book of a two-book arc (continuing in Halt’s Peril) and also the book that finally opens Halt’s backstory. The Outsiders become the central antagonist for the remainder of the original series.
