Will and Evanlyn are captives aboard a Skandian longship, bound north and sold as slaves into a winter harder than anything Araluen has prepared them for. Back home, Halt has been stripped of his Ranger’s status for disobeying the King, and he and Horace ride north to find them — officially, with no authority; unofficially, with every intention of bringing their friends back.
The Icebound Land splits the party and runs two storylines in parallel: Will’s slow, bleak survival story on the one hand, and Halt and Horace’s road trip across the continent on the other. The Halt/Horace chapters introduce a comic rhythm the series will lean on for the rest of its run.
